Sweet Black Sauce Pork Belly Recipe – I dare You To Finish It In One Sitting!

I presume this is one of life’s guilty pleasures.

I didn’t have time to cook dinner for today, so I guessed I wanted to whip something up fast and easy. (Too engrossed in reading Eragon novels). Went to the supermarket and picked up some belly pork. Somehow, my recipes are in a way infused with the heritage of my Peranakan roots. Must be my grandmother…

Anyway, you might notice that this recipe is slightly similar to the all time favourite – Babi Ponteh. And it might even pass off for the Black Sauce Stewed Belly Pork savoured by the Chinese. With all due respect to what tradition this recipe comes from, I think it is more important that it is quick and fast to cook, and doesn’t require much attention from.

I said “much attention” not “no attention”, so if you smell something burning, I suggest you better run to the kitchen and pray that its just the neighbour burning leaves.

  • A few dashes of ground white pepper.
  • Pinch of salt
  1. Marinate the pieces of belly pork with the marinating ingredients. Ensure that it is well mixed thoroughly. If you have time, set it aside for 30 minutes, else cooking straight away will suffice as well.
  2. Heat oil in pan. When oil is hot, take only the pieces of marinated belly pork and fry both sides for 1 minute. Enjoy the fragrance erupting from the pan.
  3. Mix 2 cups water with remaining marinate and pour it into the pan, covering the belly pork.
  4. Take lid and cover. Simmer for 35-45 minutes.
  5. Serve hot.
