Its that time of year again when new delights arouse the senses. And for Around De World – A Pasta Affair, a plethora of new items are being introduced to the menu. Previously, my visit to Around De World was a spur of the moment while browsing the alley at Liang Seah Street. At that time, I only ordered the house specialty “Curry Up My Life”. It was not your ordinary fare and I was keen to try out more. Who knew that just in a few months after my last visit, the menu has been extended to cater to and excite even more tastebuds.

And its definitely Christmas in season at Around De World. The interior has been decorated with with hues of red, silver and purple. Together with the soothing piped music of carols and heralds from the angels, life has certainly seemed to take a calm and slower step.

For the day, I had the customized set menu for the food bloggers (organised by Calvin from The Foodielicious World). As a starter for each table to share, we had the Caesar Salad. Crisp pieces of lettuce garbed in a generous serving of mayonnaise and dashed with chunks of crispy salted croutons and bacon bits. Simple but good.

The Cheesy Bolognese Fries ($3.90) was highly recommended. Imagine the traditional Cheese Fries from KFC minus the mayaonnaise and topped with a ladles of chunky umami rich meaty bolognese sauce. The golden brown fries is made even more sinful in this dish, but absolutely a lip smacker.

ADW Wings ($5.90) , deep fried battered drumlets served with a special bbq sauce. Why they call it “Wings” I won’t know, but this was average for me.

And now onto the pastas! For me personally, I had the Chilli O’ Crab Spaghetti ($14.90). Served smoking with a meaty pincer plus crab meat infused within the sauce, this was one dish that made the guests sneeze as it was prepared. I had the level 3 (the spiciest and very spicy for some), but it was ok for me. Crunchy croutons that decorate the dish provide interesting contrast in texture to the otherwise silky pasta with sauce.

And if you like, you can even get your pastas served Penne style.

The Chicken Terrifiyaki and Mushroom ($11.90) which I tasted reminded me strongly of a terriyakied chinese stir fry. The noodles are served wet with juicy marinated chicken pieces, the overall taste was sweet with the slightly smoky essence of the terriyaki sauce. To like it or not, I guess its an individual’s preference.

Chicken Pest’O $9.90

I didn’t try the next 4 pastas and much of the 2 cheesy baked rice ordered by the rest of the food bloggers, but I got pictures! And they look good!

Wasanara ($9.90) – Not on the menu but you can order if you like the challenge.

Aglio Olio ($7.90)

The Cheesepie for dessert is a simple cheese lover’s dream. Even stickier and cheesier than any ordinary cheesecake, the texture was extremely velvety with the smooth creamy essence of cheese. Flavours is kept simple with natural cheese scented with tinges of sugar throughout. Coupled with the tart base, this was excellent.

The Tetramisu ($6.90) aptly named because of 4 distinct layers is a creation inspired from the tiramisu. Layers of chocolate, sugar, coffee jelly, kahlua soaked cake and mascarpone cheese make up the dish. And a layer of chocolate/coffee powder dusted at the top gives a fascinating dreamy presentation.

I also had the Banana Bar ($5.90). Layered with chunks of sliced banana within the sponge and then topped with a good spread of velvety dark sweetened chocolate. This was one rich serving of fruit.

Around De World never ceases to amaze me. The humble team of chefs led by Chef D who graduated from Le Cordon Bleu are each about finding their own creativity and inspiration around the world. A hip modern cafe targeted towards expressing the youth of the world, it will be interesting to visit the cafe, and to come back for more when suddenly the urge to indulge in that tetramisu sets in. Especially since Christmas is around the corner.
