Buffets that stretch the dollar while giving very decent quality dishes should always be shared. The Traders Hotel from now till 31st October 2013 is featuring an assortment of delectable Penang favourites straight off the buffet menu at its restaurant, Cafe Biz. Traditional dishes like the Penang Char Kway Teow, Assam Laksa, Penang Hokkien Mee, Juhu Eng Chai, Assam Prawns and more will make their appearance during both lunch and dinner. Furthermore, with the restaurant carrying a 1 for 1 buffet lunch and dinner credit card promotion for most days of the week, this makes the dining experience at Cafe Biz all the more sweeter.
The Traders Hotel Lobby
For this Penang promotional season, Traders hotel is proud to host guests chefs Lim Thow Shong and Ridzuan Bin Mat from the Golden Sands Resorts. The assortment of Penang dishes will be rotated daily, and all served on top a range of International cuisine. Those who love visiting Ah Hoi’s Kitchen will be happy to know that a selection of six Penang dishes will also be specially available at the restaurant.
Start off dinner with a serving of Jiu hu eng Chai (Cuttlefish Kangkong Salad). A very simple creation that bodes fresh flavours from the sea, basked in a serving of prawn paste sauce. The hae ko was sweet and not too pungent, though I would also say that this was a little too refined for my liking. Still, if you love to have more cuttlefish than kangkong, having this dish at the buffet makes it all the more worth it.
The Penang Fried Hokkien Mee was very well done for the night. Savoury, with the touch of prawn stock well permeated throughout, the flavours of this serving of fried noodles was hearty in each bite. The noodles, a slight rich in alkaline flavours provided that rounded contrast to intense savouriness. This is a dish best enjoyed when hot from the pan!
For a very decent serving of warm, comfort food, go for the Chicken Curry Kapitan. This nonya dish was quite well done, both in terms of flavour and meat tenderness. The curry is heavily scented and textured with lemongrass and buah keras, giving a nutty yet grassy fragrance freshness throughout. Enjoy shots of spiciness here and there, and revel in the even spread of onion sweetness. It will go very well with steamed white rice.
The Assam Prawns were good to the last bite. The prawns, in their crispy shells, are generously coated with a thick assam sauce that carried a heavy contrast of tangy sour and fruity sweet. My mouth waters just thinking about this dish. While I loved this dish from start to end, I do note that it lacks the presence of any tamarind fruit or seeds. That would make the dish all the more better, and delectable.
What is going to a Penang buffet and not having a bowl of the Assam Laksa? You should. The Assam Laksa for the promotion is not too sour, with a good spread of tangy flavours complemented by tones of seafood savouriness and refreshing bursts of colour from the chilli, mint, pineapple and onion. Add in more prawn paste where desired. That said, I still wish this dish could have been bolder in its flavours, with slurps that remind you of a good, freshest catch of the day.
Penang Ox-Tail Soup
A dessert to go for is the Pengat Pisang. Admittedly, this is my first time trying this dish and I daresay I loved it from first sip to last lick. The richness of coconut, unique caramelized sweetness of gula melaka and fruity textures and fragrance from the bananas is a wonderful combination. When this dish is enjoyed piping hot, a whole new dimension of flavours just appear ripe for the picking. Fantastic. It is not available every day though, and I would strongly recommend having this when it is available. (Alternatively, you could try your luck by calling the restaurant to see if they are serving this for day)
Freshly prepared Oyster Omellete
Counter of sweets and what other rainbow delights!
The Penang Buffet promotion at Cafe Biz, Traders Hotel is one well worth going especially if you have a credit card that qualifies for the promotion. You get to enjoy the range of selected Penang favourites on top of an International buffet spread. Notables and must haves is the Assam Prawns, Fried Hokkien Mee and Pengat Pisang as these will definitely strike a note to satisfy. That said, I would also recommend enjoying the dishes when they are served freshly prepared and hot from the counter. There’s something about Penang dishes that just doesn’t seem the best when it is not prepared a la minute and hot! The Penang Char Kway Teow (featured in the top photo), while it looked fabulous on display, was there for quite some time. Still, if you are looking for a good night’s out with a comfy setting and spread of delectables that will stretch the value of your dollar, the Penang Buffet promotion at the Traders Hotel is one to consider.
