Household brand Tip Top Curry Puff will celebrate their 36th year in business with the launch of a brand new flavour – Nonya Beef Rendang Puff! Tip Top was founded in 1979 at an Ang Mo Kio Coffeeshop. Regulars and fans of the family-run store will remember seeing the owners Mr. and Mrs. Looi and the family painstakingly wrapping each individual curry puff for sale. Even today, each puff is still handmade with tender loving care and stuffed with ingredients ranging from their popular Chicken Curry to caramelized onions and sardine paired with slices of chilies.
The new Nonya Beef Rendang Puff ($1.60) is a stellar choice for fans who loves to sink their teeth into chunks of succulent beef. The meat is well steeped with sweet and spicy rendang flavours, with a gentle heartiness that is a touch salty and fragrantly paired with the buttery crust. It was a good portion and well worth the calories.
The signature Chicken Curry Puff ($1.40) features a good combination of curried potatoes and chicken, a portion of hard boiled egg and wrapped with the same, unique crust. The crust while crisp and mildly fragrant, may be a little thick at certain ends – giving one the impression of more puff to its filling. Still, for its combination with chicken curry, I thought that was still a decent pairing.
The Sardine Puff ($1.40) on the other hand would have been better matched with a thinner, crispier pastry. Perhaps I’m well used to sardine puffs being light and flaky to the point that the pastry in this case was a little too much for my liking.
All in, Tip Top serves up a decent range of curry puffs that will always be a familiar favourite for those who grew up eating it. The choice of adding the Nonya Beef Rendang to its existing puff line spruces up the variety available with a very decent attempt that will please rendang lovers who wants a bite on the go. It is an iconic heritage brand that will be particularly ideal this year for parties especially since the whole country is celebrating SG50. Go for the Chicken Curry and Beef Rendang, I’m sure they will be set to please.
Thank you Tip Top for the puffs.
