Tucked far away in the cozy little corner of Fairways Drive, and located near the Old Singapore Turf Club, lies an unpretentious restaurant with its red door. In the early mornings, the setting is pictured with horses trotting throughout the streets and those arriving for a lazy brunch to start off the day.
Today’s weather was simply scorching by the time I arrived at Fairways Drive at about 1030am for my reservation.
Fortunately, I had an indoor seating which under the cool wind of the air conditioner, made the entire picturesque setting much more pleasant to adore at.
My first order was the Crabmeat & Mango Salad ($22). A salad combined with Flower crabmeat, julienne of fresh mango, tamarind powder, celery leaf, baby spinach and drizzled with balsamic reduction. This was one dish that had flavours well combined together.
The chunks of flower crabmeat provided the savoury sea taste, the mango with its sweet tart flavours and the celery leaves with baby spinach the scent of the earth. Interestingly, the drizzle of balsamic dressing and powder of tamarind gave a good contrast in flavours to the dish itself. And the tomato confit is one ingredient hard to miss. A wholesome dish that is refreshing and light.
My second dish was Eggs Florentine ($16). Served up deliciously on a bed of sauteed baby spinach on a toasted homemade English muffin and topped off with hollandaise sauce, this is one dish that simply screams “comfort food”. Still, it was with the grate of ground black pepper and salt over the servings, a more smoky and tastier aroma can be achieved.
The hollandaise sauce was creamy and the slight tart flavour contrasted well with the savoury slightly runny yolk and the neutral spinach. And the dash of truffle oil was simply delicious in bringing out an earthy taste. Now, I just want to try the Eggs Benedict.
The third dish that came up was the BLT & E Sandwich ($18). Streaky bacon, tempura oyster, lemon aioli & shredded lettuce stuffed within slices of toasted brioche, this was one dish that is meant to be eaten right on the spot. The tempura oyster retained its juciness and the streaky bacon complemented well with its smoky saltish flavour that spreaded clearly throughout each bite.
A decent portion and definitely a serving to just kick back and relax with the newspapers in one hand and the sandwich in the other. While all is good, I would have preferred if it came with a good slice of cheese or drizzle of sauce that would enhance the flavours.
Finally, what is more comfort food than a serving of Macaroni & Cheese ($20). This is one dish that is not to be taken lightly. For such a simply, home cooked affair, I enjoyed this the most. All it took was excellently cooked macaroni and the combination of Mimolette, Gruyere, Mozzarella and Emmenthal with a gratinated top grilled to perfection that summed up the entire meal. Each piece of pasta itself was bursting with just the right amount of creaminess and melted cheese that everything was a delight. A must order when I go back again!
For desserts, I called for a Home Made Muffin ($3). Three varieties are available, Blueberry, Zucchini Walnut, and Orange Chocolate. This time round, I ordered the Zucchini and Walnut muffin. Served up toasty warm and moist, this was one muffin that went exceptionally well either on its own or with the home made marmalade or berry jam. Not too sweet, with a nutty, full textured body, this is a muffin that would win me hands down. And as a side? Berries are served up as well =)
The interior of Mimolette is simply decorated with focus mainly being on the cuisine and the natural ambience. It sets itself as an ideal location for functions and gatherings alike.Outdoor, Alfresco dining options are also available, though in the scorching sun of today’s weather, this was one option that could be better in the cooling breeze of the night. A very relaxing atmosphere with sofas adorning the open front.
The dining portions of Mimolette is catered more towards the natural ingredients complementing with each other and the familiar options of comfort food one would order and relax with. With the beautiful setting, laidback atmosphere away from the city area and friendly service, the value spent makes the experience well worth it.
Many thanks to Executive Chef Louie Moong and his team for whipping up the excellent meal.
