With less than a month to go for the mid-autumn festival, this is probably the best time to think about what mooncakes you would want to indulge in with the family and friends. For a fruity escapade, the selection from GoodwoodPark Hotel always seeks to please with its spread of tropical light hearted flavours to the intense and famous durian. This year new on the menu is the Pink Guava with Passionfruit and Rambutan Snowskin Mooncake. The zesty fruit offerings from GoodwoodPark in this year’s mooncake festival is definitely a refreshing step out of the traditional, and in layers of sweetness anyone can appreciate!
When I collected the mooncakes from GoodwoodPark Hotel, I was immediately impressed by the sleek packaging and accompanying cooler bag in tones of sepia floral. A very charming design that seeks to keep any purchase of snowskin mooncakes decently fresh for a longer period.
The box carried the same floral motifs, making this almost a perfect gift for anyone on first sight.
While durian traditionalists might opt for the Durian Snowskin Twin Treasures (Limited Edition $80 for 2 pieces of D88 and Mao Shan Wang), I thought the Snowskin Combo ($54 for 4) reflected a good spread of tropical fruit flavour in varying levels of sweetness and touches. Each box contains a piece of Pink Guava with Passionfruit and Rambutan, Mango with Pomelo, D24 Durian, and Cempedak snowskin mooncakes. They are brightly coloured and definitely a crowd pleaser.
One of the most original flavours for me had to be the Cempedak. The crisp sweet flavour in notes resembling the beautiful jackfruit and caramelized hints of durian was refreshing from start to end. Each bite was well worth it, and because it is mostly fruit, it leaves you thinking that this is quite a delicious yet healthy option for the season.
The new flavour of Pink Guava with Passionfruit and Rambutan was unique and excellent on its own. The sweetness of pink guava, a little rougher and sharply more intense than the guava, is well pronounced in this offering. Pair that with some zesty and tangy passionfruit and the fleshly bits of rambutan, what you get is a medley of fruity flavours in one single sitting.
The Mango with Pomelo is almost like the Mango Pudding with Pomelo bits and can be a familiar favourite for those who love to seek to what they know best. A good combination.
The D24 durian Snowskin Mooncake is probably best enjoyed last. With its strong, slightly pungent flavours, it is sure to overwhelm the loving sweetness slowly built up from the rest of the mooncakes. Enjoy bits of fibrous textures within the filling and indulge in one of the hotel’s signatures for a very long time. If you are still interested in more durian mooncakes, there is the Premium Durian Snowskin Combo ($66) that comprises of Mao Shan Wang, Butter Durian, Red Prawn and D88. Only 1000 boxes are available since its launch.
