Strawberry Egg Tarts and Kiwi Egg Tarts
We have all heard of Portuguese Egg Tarts, and one can imagine the satisfying warm and mellow sweet egg custard within that crumbles to perfect bites while all in a crisp yet flaky pastry shell. Yet when I visited Serangoon’s NEX over the weekend, I saw this Caucasian family delightfully enjoying these little cups of what seemed like tarts. And that was when I noticed the queue over at Fancy Delight with the display cabinet visually tempting customers with a whole range of more than 10 different varieties of egg tarts.
Just imagine that, more than 10 different varieties, and as each egg tart is sold, one can sniff away at the trays of freshly baking egg tarts in the oven. Right on the spot, warm and crumble with ranges from the decadently sweet to the mouthwatering savoury.
Green Tea Egg Tarts and Original Egg Tarts
The egg tarts are notably in a unique yet familiar shape altogether. Instead of the traditional bowl like form that would comfortably fit the size of the palm, these egg tarts from Fancy Delight are shaped like shot glasses stuffed with piping hot custard and filling.
Original Egg Tarts and Double Chocolate Egg Tarts fresh from the oven
Flavours range from the simple Original to exotic fruit toppings and flavours like Kiwi and Blueberry. And for the savoury tooths out there, there are delectable treats such as the Pepper Chicken, Mushroom Chicken, and even Cheese to make a perfect tea time snack.
I had the Original, Durian and the Pepper Chicken. For the original, the flavour throughout is a tender sweet with a texture smooth and soft complemented by the crumbly yet firm crust. The combination is almost flawless that left me tempted to go for thirds.
And for a nice mix of savoury and sweet, Pepper Chicken offers a good choice as the slightly rich umami base coupled with the sweet egg custard opens up flavours giving a new perspective on what would be a traditional flavour.
