Eat, Drink and be Merry: Morganfield’s Christmas Menu 2016

I had dined once before at Morganfield’s, and I was a fan after that meal. The restaurant chain’s good music, Southern hospitality, and satisfying portions meant I was instantly a convert. I was therefore extremely excited when I was invited to the launch of their Christmas 2016 menu at their Star Vista outlet.

However, its Christmas 2016 menu is a mixed bag. On one hand, this Midwestern restaurant’s famed prime ribs held up to scrutiny, with meat that fell off the bones; on the other, it disappointed with one particularly poorly done dish and some wallet-unfriendly prices (especially if you have a huge appetite)!

After all, this is the restaurant that has tremendously value-for-money ongoing promotions including:

Weekend Ribs Buffet ($40++)

My personal favourite for its tremendous value. Free flow Sticky Bones, sides and soups. This is a wonderful opportunity to try out the restaurant’s sauces, sides and soups! The promotion runs from 11 am to 4 pm on weekends and public holidays.

Kids Eat for Free

Available on Saturdays, Sundays and Public Holidays. Kids below 8 years or 120cm in height get to enjoy a free meal for every adult’s main meal, and the promotion is good for two children’s meals per table.

Top Value Set Lunch (from $12.90++)

Available for dine-in from Mondays to Fridays (excluding Public Holidays), 11am to 3pm. There are 14 different mains to choose from and each main comes with free Soup of the Day and a soft drink or hot coffee/ tea.

Happy Hour

My second favourite promotion after the weekend ribs’ buffet. From 11 am to 8 pm on Mondays to Saturdays, and all day on Sunday, enjoy $10 pints of Carlsberg draught and $9 glass of happy hour wine and spirits.

Birthday Ribs Pass

Spend more than $400 on your birthday with the restaurant, and a year’s free ribs is yours—you are entitled to a free slab of sticky bones from the restaurant every month, for a year.

Given the restaurant’s good deals, it is therefore a pity that the restaurant priced its dine-in “Eat, Drink and be Merry” Christmas 2016 menu the way it did. A half-slab of Cranberry or Hazelnut Sticky Bones (good for one), for instance, costs $29.90++, and a full slab will set you back $45.90++. Compare this to its weekend ribs buffet deal, and you begin to understand why this I am a little ornery over the pricing. That said, the ribs are still good, though.

Morganfield’s Christmas Feast ($149.90++) — great food, but not the best value for money

Black Angus Beef Rib ($89.90) – Yes to ordering this if you’re a beef connoisseur

Given my enormous appetite, Morganfield’s Christmas Feast ($149.90++) similarly came as a little bit of a let-down. It is an impressive platter, both visually and gastronomically—the half-slabs of hazelnut and cranberry sticky bones are delicious and take pride of place—but share the platter with two other big eaters, and you might feel that you didn’t get the best bang for your buck.

The same charge could almost also be levied on Black Angus Beef Rib ($89.90++), if not for how tender and juicy the beef rib was. Braised and glazed with Morganfield’s signature hickory BBQ sauce, and served with a lip-smacking combination of mustard, hickory BBQ sauce & red wine reduction, the beef rib is a deserving mainstay on the plates of beef-loving diners.

The Candied Bacon ($9.90++)

The biggest disappointment of my dinner was surely the candied bacon ($9.90++), because of the rave reviews I heard from everyone who tried it during last year’s Christmas menu. This is no hyperbole—these people positively glowed as they described the crisp sweetness of the glazed bacon that they had the fortune to sample. Imagine our incredulity, then, when my dining companions and I placed these fabled bacon slices into our mouths. I shall not denigrate the hard work of the fantastic Morganfield’s chefs, but something had gone wrong in the preparation of the batch of bacon that evening. To their credit, the staff were very apologetic, and promised to investigate.

The restaurant also showcased its Christmas takeaway menu, available until the last day of 2016 (orders to be made 3 days in advance, with a $25 delivery charge). Besides the dishes above, Morganfield’s takeaway menu also features a Crackling Pork Roast ($38.90+) and Roast Chicken ($32.90). The pork was almost as good as the roasted pork the top dim sum restaurants serve—I say almost, because they don’t cube it for you the same way, and this matters for its taste—and passed muster with its crispy skin and juicy meat. The Roast Chicken ($32.90+) was also delicious: it’s hard to go wrong when it is stuffed with rosemary, onions, celery & carrots, and served with roasted potatoes.

The Roast Chicken (1.4 kg, $32.90+) is a worthy takeaway dish

Morganfield’s Christmas menu isn’t exactly something to shout about, given its lack of value relative to its usual promotions. But am I still a Morganfield’s fan? If its reliably delicious ribs, hearty sides, and extensive range of drinks is anything to go by, I’m still a card-carrying fan of its great soul food.

Thank you Morganfield’s for the invitation.
