5 dishes to try at Chong Pang Market & Food Centre

It’s always a beauty when you wake up in the morning and head down to the nearest hawker centre for some delectable Singaporean breakfast and perhaps a cup of kopi. Northerners around the Yishun area will have their quick fix at the Chong Pang Market & Food Centre. The list of five things to try here are my key favourites, dishes that I would usually order. If you do have more to recommend, feel free to share!

First up, we have the good ol’ Chinese Nasi Lemak and Beehoon stall. Pay $2.20 for a set including an egg and a chicken wing, and perhaps be like me and add another wing for $1.20. The chicken wings is exceptionally crispy, with good fragrance and naturally finger licking good.

I was recommended to the Braised Duck rice some time back, and it certainly lives up to its name by attracting a following. A short queue typically ensues for a plate of Boneless Braised Duck coupled with flavoured rice, a side of Braised egg, tofu and some peanuts. I found it good enough as comfort food, simply inspiring me to cook my own Braised Duck.

How can there be breakfast without Chwee Kueh. The stall here has perhaps been around since I was a little boy. The Chwee Kueh is buttery smooth, with a light texture that is well seasoned by the fragrant Cai poh. A tad oily but I guess that makes it all the more tasty.

This was my most recent recommendation – Bee Hoon Kueh. The hand cut noodles are delectably chunky and firm, giving a marvelous texture as it is paired with the savoury egg soup. It is a dish I would save for that cold rainy day, when you do want nothing but a bowl of hot soup and some Bee Hoon Kueh noodles to sit by an open fire your Korean drama.

Unfortunately, I wanted to order a plate of Chai Tao Kueh, but strangely the uncle closed the stall before I even got to the place. Bee Kee Cooked Food does serve up some excellent carrot cake and perhaps the next time I’m there, I’ll relive the memories.

The food journey is perhaps best ended with a mix of Yuan Yang soya bean milk and chin chow. The drink starts from 60cenrw onwards and is probably one of the cheapest ways to refresh yourself from such a hot day.

Mayim – Undescribable Chinese Cuisine In The Northern Suburbs

Ok, I know what many of you want to say. Its “Indescribable” and not “Undescribable”. I chose this word after sheer intense thought (even though it was an error I noticed after uploading the photo on facebook) as it is a word yet to be defined grammatically correct in the dictionary. Call it as you would like, but perhaps this pure coincidence is an apt representation of the Chinese cuisine I had at Northpoint, Yishun.

The variety is plentiful, and I was simply exhausted looking through the menu with each dish having a picture on its own. Dishes like the Sweet & Sour Pork with Dragonfruit simply looked too tempting, and yes the price was equally tempting as well – $8.50! Where else can you get cuisine at prices like this in Singapore, and with such a presentation? Needless to say, maybe this truly is a restaurant undefined and not simply just one with the crowd. But its this uniqueness that probably has crowds drawn back over and over again.

Quickbites! Laksa. This is the shop name.

Often enough when I walk past Yishun Central row of shophouses to get to my optometrist, I will always see a crowd of people at this particular shop slurping away happily at their bowls of Laksa. And if the crowd was not enough, there would be a queue with people “ta-paoing” the delicious noodle dish. So I felt it was due time last Sunday to engage in a bowl of this particularly local favourite with my grandma.

Heartlanders’ Food Along Yishun Street 22

Chai Tao Kueh. With the Cai Po and sambal fried lovingly to a “pang” state on the inside!

First up! An announcement. As of the 11th of October 2009, I will be officially using my Canon Eos 1000D DSLR Camera as my primary photographic tool when doing my food reviews. It is time for my Fujifilm Finepix Z10fd to take a backseat after accompanying me through over 150 posts in this blog. (And also the fact of a draining battery life and a weakening camera sensor)

Its been some time since I blogged about my outings with my Mama Helen. So today after church, we decided to revisit familiar stalls that have always entertained us with their warm, home cuisine for many months.

The Chai Tao Kueh (Fried Carrot Cake) stall is a key feature in any Singapore Heartland coffeeshop. And the one at Blissful Foodcity Coffeeshop whips up the dish very well. Making it one of the better Fried Carrot Cakes I have eaten as of yet!

The Cai Po was fried within the the carrot cake and it was tantalizing that each bite revealed the salty and slightly tangy texture of the preserved vegetable.

Add that feel to the hint of sambal also mixed within, woosh! Nice. And yes, the egg was fried to a crisp and savoury state with the kueh being tender soft. $2.50 for a small portion, $3.00 grabs a big plate.
