Calling all Crab Lovers: Enjoy a “Crab-tivating” Spread at Seasonal Tastes

Crab lovers will be in paradise with a view to match! Seasonal Tastes at the Westin has always thrilled with its amazing 32nd storey views and its excellent dessert spread. The signature dining venue of the Westin now possesses another trump card with its daily buffet dinner featuring seafood. Freshly-shucked oysters, sashimi, half-shell scallops, prawns, crayfish, lobster and shrimp are on the spread, but the crab dishes feature the most prominently.



The crab dishes are why I find myself at the spacious restaurant on a recent Thursday evening. For $68/pax from Sundays to Thursdays, and $82/pax on Fridays and Saturdays, diners get a staggering assortment of crab dishes on rotation, including:

  • Wok-fried Blue Crab with Garlic and Ginger,
  • Wok-fried Blue Crab with Black Pepper,
  • Steamed Crab with Golden Garlic,
  • Deep-fried Crab with salted Egg Yolk,
  • Yellow Curry Crab,
  • Crab with Spicy Sour Plum Sauce,
  • Singapore Chilli Crab with Mantou,
  • Wok-fried Crab with Coriander Seeds, Bell Pepper and Onions…

This selection is not even exhaustive. Executive chef Aaron Foster constantly creates new dishes in the open-plan kitchen based on the availability of fresh ingredients, and Foster says that his Italian-Canadian heritage and childhood growing up near the coast meant that he learnt to fish, cook Dungeness crabs, and appreciate diverse seafood dishes from a tender age.

Foster’s formative experiences with seafood has evidently been instructive and translate well onto the plate—the crabs are not only well-cooked but are also delightfully meaty.

I recommend that diners leave space for a further three courses:

Steamed Whole Snapper with Ginger, Salted Beans and Clams

First, the catch of the day, which is either whole baked salmon or snapper. The snapper (paired with clams, ginger and salted beans) was tender, savoury and mouth-wateringly juicy.

Second, diners should try the beef noodles/laksa from the live cooking station. The noodle broth and laksa gravy was extremely rich and choc-a-bloc with ingredients. My dining companions were similarly enthused with these dishes.

The dessert spread is a must-try

Finally, diners should not miss the dessert spread. A non-exhaustive list of what they should attempt to try:

  • Four Gelato flavours (vanilla, avocado, mango, dark chocolate) … with fourteen different sprinkles,
  • The chocolate fondue with fresh-cut fruits, marshmallows, and breadsticks,
  • And a very delicious series of bite-sized cakes and tarts.

Seasonal Tastes is a great place for seafood lovers, buffet connoisseurs, group celebrations, family outings and to bring a date you want to impress. Just be sure you come early to sample everything, including the stunning views from the restaurant at sunset.
