About Me and GourmetEstorie

Time sure has passed by quickly hasn’t it. Looking at my older “About Me” section from J2k3blogs, I realised that this online food journal of mine has been around since 2003 when I was in secondary one. There were many changes as it all began with a recipe website and me dabbling in some HTML code under Dreamweaver. I am now finishing National Service so I should have a bit more time to go out to eat, explore, and savour.

Fast forward that to 2010 and on September 17, I officially launched GourmetEstorie. This new Singapore Food Blog of mine is both an archival of all the visits to restaurants and hawker fare I’ve been to in the last few years and also a vault of my own memories, photos, writings, and recipes.

I guess two of my main interests is Food Photography and tasting the spectrum of flavours, textures and creations available. You might have noticed that with almost each new article published, I have a “Main photo”. Inspired from that of cookbooks, the main photo is usually the best taken picture of the day or a general summary of the restaurant and perhaps even the best tasted food. I sure hope the picture will whet your appetite!

And for those of you who always wondered what J2K3 actually meant, its Justin Two Thousand Three. A bit absurd or perhaps a tad ridiculous but if you were in Secondary One, I guessed that such a name was already a cool feat. Who knew that it would have left an impression right to this very day.

So till then, Ciao!

P.S. Contact me for any freelance food photography. =)

About Me from www.j2k3blogs.com

About Me from www.j2k3blogs.com and edited for the initial launch of GourmetEstorie

Singapore, a big island full of food. Well, big in my perspective.

First of all, welcome to www.gourmetestorie.com. I am Justin Daniel Pereira, webmaster, photojournalist, blogger and food critque of this website. Basically, a Bao Ka Liao person. My interest has always been in food and the origins of this website alone started in 2003 when I was 13 on the free Yahoo webservice, Geocities.

I started with a combination of recipes and cooking tips and over the years the website has undergone major revamps and changes. In 2007, I decided to take a new perspective with my website and changed its objectives to providing food reviews. I felt that as Singaporean cuisine has become more diverse, it was a great time to pick out the best from the masses and especially those with the value for money. The old archive which is http://j2k3.blogspot.com is part of that history and now in 2009, it was time to streamline the resources provided again while not changing the directive. Therefore, what you see now in the website, www.gourmetestorie.com, is the recreation and revitalisation of a very old institution.

(Well if you consider 7 years as a long time, it is old.)
Well, this passion for food is naturally honed by my family. My grandma, dad, mum all cooks and a majority of my family on either side either cooks or bakes. So yeah, I kinda got influenced. You can look at the photos below on how that passion has nurtured me.

Honestly, I feel like I am writing a speech here. Must be something to do with those teachings in the junior colleges!

Still, I am only a former student and now I am serving my nation so my budget is a little wee bit tight. So, don’t go expecting food reviews from those high end places around Singapore. What I aim is to showcase the best and maybe the occasional “those who could do better according to past experiences” category.

Currently, I am using a DSLR : Canon EOS 1000D. Very excited as I pursue my dedication to food photography =)

But of course my Fujifilm digital point and shoot camera: Finepix Z10FD is not out of commission. It is still my good companion when I really feel like only bringing something small and light around. After all, it has been with me for over 150 articles in this blog. Quite a mean feat! I just hope the two cameras won’t start fighting with each other. No favouritism please.

I would love to hear from you if you have ideas on where I could explore for my next food adventure. Or if you have any thoughts or food stories to share, please feel free to email me! It would be exciting as this blog moves on to the next level of food reviews and creativity.

Stumbled upon your page by chance while searching for Xin Cuisine.  To think Dr Leslie Tay is good, you are fantastic!!!
Until I get a DSLR, currently using Powershot SX30is, not sure if my food photography can even get me anywhere.
    Lovely photos.

Hi Justin, What a beautiful blog you have and I am pleased to find another foodie! I enjoy good food from hawker to michelin starred restaurants. I will be visiting Singapore in August for just a few days. I am having a hard time locating the good hawker food stands. Can you recommend some of your favorite/must eat hawker spots? I am bored from fine dinning unless if they’re really worth trying…  Thanks!!! Kat from Seattle

    Good work out there dude…

Food is universal language, any intention to try more “exotic” form of food?
