A Warm, Tangy Rich Broth That Is Satisfying For The Soul

After the stop at Kok Kee Wanton Noodle, I ventured further down the road in the blistering heat to find out what goodies I could encounter. Being Vesak Day, the side alley leading to the temple was packed with processions, people and a vibrant atmosphere. Though amidst the bustle, there stood a food stall all on its own catering to a slightly different kind of crowd.

Cheng Mun Chee Kee Pig Organ Soup would probably be the last thing on your mind if you were to think of invigorating, fulfilling and heart warming soup. One would probably think that Chicken Soup is the defacto requirement for the soul. But then again, lets make it Singapore style, and there you have it – Pig Organ Soup.

Now, this is not the time to get squirmish. But if one were to appreciate the true beauty of the entire broth, then one will be able to find that in each piece of ingredient lies a unique texture and revealation that when paired with the tangy salty sweet base, will lead to a heightened sense of alertness and warmth.

For $3.50 a bowl, I was impressed by the generous portion of ingredients given. The liver was exceptionally good with it being cooked just right before serving, leading to an ultra smooth, slightly flaky texture that melts upon biting. There is a good mix of different innards, tofu and veggies that is very filling. The soup base itself is delightful as I felt the preserved vegetable used to not be exceptionally salty or sour, but delicate, light and airy. A taste that will allure you back for more.

The aunty was also very kind to serve up half a bowl of rice even though I requested for no rice. She insisted that to enjoy the dish in its entirety, hot steaming white rice is a must.

The Chestnuts with Floss, $3.00, however were a little disappointing. Being a lover of chestnuts, I thought this would be one dish that would drive me nuts. Instead, the chestnuts are those obviously of the prepackaged brand that carried little smoky aroma and robust flavourness. The floss itself was also too little in quantity to entice the senses with the chestnuts nutty texture.

Still, Cheng Mun Chee Kee Pig Organ Soup is definitely a place to visit for the crave or fond memories one would get when enjoying a good bowl of Pig Organ Soup. Finished the broth? You can simply bring the bowl to the counter and ask for more! Just like any good old traditional coffeeshop that partakes delight in giving another patron a satisfied meal.
