As I round up the mooncake write ups for this season, one set of sweet delights to consider are the mooncakes from Yan Ting Cantonese Restaurant from the St Regis, Singapore. The highlight this year are five newly crafted snowskin mooncake creations. There is the Mao Shan Wang Durian, Green Tea Snowskin Mooncake with Melon Seeds, Purple Sweet Potato Snowskin Mooncake, the Mixed Berries Snowskin Mooncake with Strawberry Paste and the Royal Milk Tea Snowskin Mooncake with Red Bean Paste and White Chocolate Champagne Truffle. With the mooncakes elegantly packaged in a sturdy white box with floral motifs and a jade pendant, this makes a perfect gift for family and close friends.
The packaging from the St Regis
Out of the mooncake boxes I’ve received this year, this one takes the cake in first impressions for the piece of jade (or jade coloured) pendant hanging on the front. Symbolically, the packaging exudes a certain air of elegance and tradition, and is a departure from the more modern designs.
The Assorted Snowskin Mooncake collection ($67.80) come in a box of 8 pieces, 2 varieties each. A box of 8 Green Tea Snowskin Mooncakes with Melon Seeds/Mixed Berries Snowskin Mooncakes with Strawberry Paste is priced at $66.80, while the Purple Sweet Potato Snowskin Mooncakes/Royal Milk Tea Mooncakes is priced at $68.80.
The Purple Sweet Potato Snowskin Mooncake constitutes a pure white skin encasing a portion of velvety purple sweet potato. Delicately sweet, these mooncakes are perfect on its own.
For a stronger flavour, choose the Royal Milk Tea Snowskin Mooncake with Red Bean Paste and White Chocolate Champagne Truffle. The sweet, touch of smoked bitter, tea skin complements the chocolate truffle well.
A more traditional offering is the Green Tea Snowskin Mooncake with Melon Seeds. The flavour of matcha in its light bittersweet flavour blends well with the textural contrast from the melon seeds.
My favourite out of the entire selection is the Mixed Berries Snowskin Mooncake with Strawberry Paste. While the fragrance of strawberry is at most subtle, its delicate sweetness and a touch of tanginess is a nice contrast to the more neutral snowskin. Great on its own. And there is something just visually stimulating to see the strawberry paste ooze out after the cut.
Yan Ting’s mooncakes will be available at Yan Ting restaurant located at level 1U and the mooncake counter next to The Drawing Room located at the lobby level at the St Regis Hotel.
