First, a very Happy Mothers’ Day to all moms out there! This momentous event, held annually on the 2nd Sunday of May in a number of countries around the world, recognizes the efforts and passion emplaced by all moms towards raising their children and family. It is a labour of love that cannot be easily replaced by any known account. And it is with passion that most efforts will be flavourful with a dose of good quality by the side.
Chef Eric Tan, owner and founder of The Baker’s Story, translates that same dedication into the cakes and desserts he makes. His signature, the original bestselling Cheese Brownie is a unique combination of sweet and savoury in balanced flavours. As a niche since 2004, The Baker’s Story now sees its second outlet at Tanjong Pagar. Wonderful news for all those who want a taste of the passion that goes into making good ol’ home fashioned desserts that is sparkled with a labour of love.
Prior to setting up The Baker’s Story in 2004, Chef Eric Tan worked over two decade as a pastry chef in international hotels like the Mandarin Oriental and Sheraton Towers. It was a dream come true for the Chef to finally set up his own little shop, where he could tickle the tastebuds of his guests with his sweet creations. The Cheese Brownie is an effort that took 6 months of experimentations, and it remains popular till this day.

I tried 6 different creations from The Baker’s Story. My personal favourite goes to the original Cheese Brownie for its unique creamy goodness that complements the smooth slightly sweet chocolate brownie really well. Something about the sweetness and savouriness makes the overall composition an excellent creation. Do try the non cheese brownies such as the Walnut Chocolate Brownie (for all those who love a bite in their brownies). I thought the Mint variant was refreshing in its own right. The Orange Cheese Brownie could do with a better punch in flavour and personally, the combination of orange, cheese and brownie was a little out of place.
Mum felt that the Crunchy Cheese Brownie was delicious, with a good balance of sweetness that was not too strong in any bite. The crunch into the biscuit base at the bottom provided an added texture that contrasted the velvety brownie and cream cheese, bringing the overall experience higher. I didn’t get to try this as she enjoyed it as I was not home, but I guess it must be really good.
