Yes, yes I made this myself. But definitely not Katong Laksa
Last Sunday I celebrated my little cousin Jun Heng’s 1st birthday at the Lion City Cafe at the Lion City Hotel (very apt name for a hotel in Singapore). They had a buffet lunch called “True Blue Nonya Buffet” and being priced at $14.80, it is one of the more cheaper buffets found featuring supposedly Peranakan fare.
While there may be some Nonya dishes such as Kueh Pie Ti, Laksa, Popiah and some Kueh-Kueh, I hardly would call it a Nonya buffet. Unless you consider Nasi Lemak, Mee Goreng, Fried Chicken Wings and Rojak some sort of Straits Cuisine.
Quite a few dishes were DIY. Laksa section, but you can add as much toppings as you want =)
Well besides the types of dishes available, the buffet was still surprisingly good enough for a small party. My aunt invited about 30 guests and with the whole restaurant to themselves and food ever flowing, it seemed like a perfect lunch. Better than having the caterers come to your house and with the need to ensure that no dust is found on that little ornament which your Mother-in-law gave.
The sambal belachan had a strong prawn taste which was a tad salty. More prawn than sambal I guess.
The concept is rather DIY (do it yourself). Dishes such as the Laksa, Mee Siam, Kueh Pie Ti, Popiah, Rojak and Nasi Lemak were all to be done by your own hand. Of course, the base ingredients and garnishes were provided, but after that, its all your imagination.
Good for parties, but if the place were to charge the buffet any higher, I would call it a too clever move to save on manpower and leave the rest to the customers.
Somewhat average assortment of dishes. But I heard that Mee Goreng was good.
I’ve got nothing much to add on here as honestly I can’t say much for the food except that it is not too bad. In that case, I guess the pictures should do the talking themselves =)

Moi Kueh Pie Ti
Let’s do the Cha Cha with the Bubor Cha Cha, Cousin’s birthday cake, Ngoh Hiang
DIY Section!
Kueh Kueh (not the red eggs or Ang Ku Kueh, thats for the birthday party), Popiah and Kueh Pie Ti counter.
Ahh, I loved the Rojak I made. Though I felt that the sauce was a little too sweet for my liking. Not enough “pang”
The before scene for that bowl of rojak above.
Of course, the Rojak section. Literally.
I somewhat loved the Mee Siam. It was good and sour.
Once again, Mee Siam DIY counter.
