It’s not everyday your young man turns 22 do you? After celebrating my birthday last week at Pan Pacific Orchard’s 10@Claymore with my family, my good friend Michel called me out for a belated birthday dinner treat. And for my choice, I made it Brotzeit, the German beer bar and restaurant which has outlets at Vivocity, Raffles City and 313@Somerset. Ever since their opening in 2006, I have heard about their colossal pork knuckles. And boy it has been a very long wait.
The order for the Schweishaxn ($36) – Pork Knuckle (Don’t ask me how to pronounce that) took a snappy 10 minutes to arrive. I have a good feeling that this being one of the more popular items on the menu, there should be a whole row of prepared pork knuckles lined up behind, deep fried for a few minutes and then served.
The portion is definitely huge and for 2 guys it was very hard to finish together with the sausage platter (see below). It is definitely great for sharing as the first few bites were awesomely lovely with the brown sauce, but as the meal went nearer to the end, I was a little too tired from engaging in a slightly tough sinewy battle with the meat, fat and crackled skin.
Expect robust savoury pork undertones which is well complemented by the side of tangy sauerkraut. And yes, you will need a good beer to go along for ultimate satisfaction.
To accompany the meal, I had the Hefe – Weissbier (0.3litre $8.50 happy hour). Paulaner which is described as the No. 1 Beer in Weissbier in Germany is a rich golden honey cloudy with a slightly sweet aftertaste. Pretty easy to drink, and smooth from start to finish. I really liked it draft.
Both Michel and I were quite open to the idea of trying out the Wurstelplatte ($32.50). As a sausage platter for 2, 5 different varieties were laid out in full shiny glory for you to cut your knife through. Served on a bed of greens with a generous side of sauerkraut, expect varieties like Spicy Chicken Sausages, Nurnberger Sausages, Pork Cheese Sausages, Weisswurst Sausages and Garlic Pork Sausages. Sweet Mustard and Hot Mustard are placed alongside to give a good flavour as a dip. Loved all, and one thing I found out? It really is hard to resist indulging in this platter.
The Pork Knuckles and Sausages at Brotzeit were good, and before I knew it I realised I had two full platters of meat. The portion size was definitely a bit much, and a third friend would have nicely rounded up the servings together. Ambience at 313@Somerset while in the open under shade, was pretty cooling and casual with plenty of scenery. Though the pork knuckles were a bit tough and dry at certain ends, I was quite ok with it as it was the casual chit chat and catching up of old times (especially when another friend Noel popped by) which was of greater value.
